Comments from Cllr Peter McDonald:

“On the 18th December there were 607 pupils in Worcestershire schools that had tested positive with coronavirus, this included post 16. The total number of staff that tested positive was 385, The number of teachers who tested positive was 106.

The number of children now absent from school is 1,655 pupils affected by Covid outbreaks (as part of a collapsed bubble).

These figures show just how serious and very worrying the rise in coronavirus is across Worcestershire. There is a need to act now to stop this deadly disease spreading serious illness and death to the people we love.

We are all very reluctant to see schools shut, however, considering the number of teachers catching the virus and the latest ONS coronavirus survey figures should be very worrying to us all. They show that cases are again rising in secondary and primary schools. The County Council should now seriously consider not reopening our schools in January.”
