Statement from Labour Group Leader, Cllr Peter Mcdonald:

“I am very pleased that the Leader of the Council has supported Labour’s call for her to write to the Government to make funding available to low-income households to prevent more families from spiralling into fuel poverty. Therefore, getting support to everyone who needs it must be a priority this winter.

With the economy in crisis, joblessness rising and the pandemic once more gathering steam and many people are expected to stay indoors more often this winter due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It is imperative that funding must be made available to low-income households to prevent more families from spiralling into fuel poverty: research has shown that up to 20% of families in the UK are thought to be living in fuel poverty.

Research shows that, every year around 10,000 people die directly as a result of a cold home. Many thousands more who cannot afford to keep their homes warm are hospitalised, suffer from a severe respiratory condition or just shiver in damp, cold homes.

Cold homes create underlying medical conditions. They take thousands of lives. Deaths and suffering from fuel poverty are not novel, unimaginable or unprecedented. It is an annual catalogue of failure to protect the most vulnerable.

Hopefully, the Government will take notice of the letter and help those most in need.”
