Cllr Peter McDonald has made the following comments with regards to the lack of help for local care homes:

“Local care homes are in need of financial help not just to pay for the extra cost PPE but in addition many employees who may feel under the weather have to self-isolate. I have been approached by a local resident who has had to self-isolate and like many others she receives no wages and deprived of the £94 a week in statutory sick pay.

It is a scandal that the front line workers we rely on to care for our most vulnerable are being penalised financially because they take time off to protect those they care for.

Local authorities have been given more than £3 billion to support services

such as care homes, but many care homes in Worcestershire have yet to receive any money so far to cover extra costs, which include staffing and protective wear.

Sadly, care homes have taken the full force of the impact of this pandemic because of government policy, and this could yet get worse. The whole sector is at risk unless the money is forth coming. Care homes should have been afforded the focus, support and protection like the NHS.

I have asked the Director of Adult Services at Worcestershire County Council to ensure all care homes in the District receive the money they are entitled to.”
